According to the a recent report by the Wall Street Journal, YouTube viewers all across the globe are collectively watching an average of 1 billion hours of video per day. This milestone is impressive considering that within two years YouTube has managed to double its average hours of 500 million in 2015.
However, this number comes as no surprise given YouTube’s 1 billion and counting user base as well as its recommendation feature, which was first introduced in 2009 by Google.
Since its inception, the YouTube recommendation feature accounts for 60 percent of video clicks from the home page and operates by allowing each user to be given a suggested video list customized by their video history and activity. Every video that is recently watched, favorited, or liked, is accounted for and ranked based on relevancy and diversity, creating a personalized algorithm. What ultimately has made the recommendation feature so successful is factoring in a candidate video’s overall global popularity which is not strictly defined by view count. This allows for a more complex set of recommended videos to be generated.
Surpassing 1 billion hours of video is not only a testament to YouTube’s robust search engine features and dedicated users but also to the shift towards digital media. At this rate, it is expected that YouTube is making serious headway on its goal to dethrone television as the most watched video entertainment medium in 2017.
